Bigger and better comes to Seven Oaks

County officials broke ground this week on an addition that will ease growing pains at the county’s largest senior center – Seven Oaks.

The facility, located on Seven Courts Drive, was too small when it opened in 1991, according to Preston Wollett, the center’s council president.

It currently has 850 members – twice the amount as other county centers of a similar size. Last year the center added 150 new

Senior news: Don’t hole up at home: Overcoming isolation

For millions of seniors, loneliness can have a very serious affect on their physical and mental health; but there are many ways to overcome loneliness and improve their quality of life.

Emotional isolation is linked to elevated blood pressure in seniors, a 2006 University of Chicago study indicated. Lonely seniors have blood pressure readings up to 30 points higher than their socially connected peers, regardless of race, sex or other health factors, researchers found.

Senior news: Advocates fight for health benefits

Twenty million American retirees are among the largest group of casualties in the war being waged by their former corporate employers against workers’ and retirees’ earned heath care benefits.

Major American corporations have taken the stance that they can no longer afford to stay competitive while paying benefits to retirees, even under contractual commitments made to retirees in their working years.
