VFW honors outstanding citizens and youth

Parkville Memorial Post 9083 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States honored outstanding citizens and youth of the community at its recent annual John G. Scales Memorial Awards Program.

Recognized were Parkville Police Precinct Officer First Class Shannon Broccolina, Firefighter Paul E. Lilley, EMT Michael McArdle, Kingsville Elementary School teacher Melissa Bush-Benford, Johns Hopkins University ROTC Cadet Sean Ashby and Parkville High School Jr. ROTC Cadet Daniel Conway.
Youth Awards went to the Post’s Voice of Democracy Contest winners: First place, Kayla Garretson of Classical Redeemer Christian School; second place, John Dorrett of Calvert Hall High School; third place, Laura Hartig of Western School of Technology; and Patriot Pen Contest winner, Ashby Henningsen of Baltimore Lutheran School.
Also honored were Buddy Poppy Queen Katelyn Ehatt of Loch Raven High School and Loyalty Day Queen Brittany Kinnear of Perry Hall High School.
Kingsville Elementary School Student Council was recognized for raising funds for the Coins for Calls program, which sends phone calling cards to military men and women.
Commander George J. Thiess and Ladies Auxiliary President Sharon Albaugh made the presentations. A buffet luncheon followed.
