Adopt-a-pet: The Baltimore County animal shelter has cats and dogs that need good homes. Oh, The Horror: Horrorfind Weekend 9, a celebration of all things horror — books, movies and more — will be held March 28-30 at the UMUC Marriott Inn and Conference Center in Adelphi (near College Park). Another Horrorfind weekend, scheduled for Aug. 15-17, will be held in Adelphi as well. Horror movie celebrities, horror writers, Halloween seminars and supernatural speakers as well as a dealers room, horror

Overlea Recreation programs: The Overlea-Fullerton Spring Lacrosse Program, beginning in March of 2008, is holding online registration for boys and girls ages 5 through 14. First-time registrants please bring copy of birth certificate to registration. Cost: For ages 6 and up — $100 (includes $20 in raffle tickets). Ages 4/5 — $55 (soft stick program and includes $20 in raffle tickets.) Discounts for families with two or three players. (Doesn’t include a soft stick player.) No refunds. Girls Softball: Girls, ages 5 to 18 as of January 1. New players must bring proof of age at the time of registration. Cost: Clinic — $40/person. No refunds. Ages 8 to 18 (HS) — $55/person. Baseball registration: for ages 5 - 15 (prior to May 1, 2008). Proof of age required at registration if child did not play in 2007. Aerobics and Step Aerobics for all ability levels is offered 7 p.m.-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, April 7-June 16, or 7 p.m.-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Per-person costs are $40 for twice-weekly classes, $50 for classes three times a week, and $60 for classes four times a week. No children allowed.
Cheerleading runs Aug.-Nov. for boys and girls ages 5-14, $85 for first child, $65 for each additional sibling. Registration at Fullerton Community Center, 7209 Belair Road (formerly the PAL Center). Scholarships Offered: The Overlea-Fullerton Recreation Council, 4304 Fullerton Avenue, is offering scholarships to graduating seniors who (a) reside within the boundaries of rec council, (b) have participated in programs offered by the rec council, (c) have volunteered within their community, and (d) have maintained an academic record of 2.0 or above. Pick up an application from the council offices during normal business hours or through a high school guidance office. Deadline for receipt of applications is Friday, April 18. The Baltimore County Association of Senior Citizens Organizations (BCASCO) offers two $350 scholarships for students training to work with seniors. Application info should include a resume of past and present accomplishments, statement of future goals, two references from teachers on college letterhead and the latest copy of QPA achievement. Single again?: The Friends of Mercy “Single Again Friends” group holds discussions on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hiss United Methodist Church, 8700 Harford Rd. Upcoming topics include “Is your life on hold?” March 25. Discussions are open to all single, separated, divorced and widowed people. Friends of Mercy is a non-denominational, volunteer, peer support group for widowed, divorced and separated – “single-again.” $2 includes light refreshments. Navy Band concert: The United States Navy Band will perform Saturday, March 29, at 8:15 p.m. at Towson University’s Center for the Arts, Kaplan Concert Hall. The program will include brass band music, marches and patriotic selections. Free, but ticket required; call 410-740-ARTS to reserve a seat.

Open houses: The Baltimore International Academy is a new charter school in Northeast Baltimore that opened its doors this year and is recruiting students for the coming school year. Accepting students from all over Baltimore City, the Academy is having several upcoming open houses:  April 22 and May 20. All begin at 7 pm. The BIA is a language immersion school, Baltimore City’s only public school of its kind. Students learn through full immersion in a foreign language. The school follows the Maryland State Volunteer Curriculum so students learn everything they would learn in an English-speaking school, but with the added benefit of mastering a second language. Four immersion tracks will be offered for the 2008-09 school year: French, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Spanish. Positions are available for students enrolling in kindergarten and 1st grade. Open houses will be held at the BIA campus at 3515 Taylor Ave. (the campus of the Maryland School for the Blind).
