Dining Out: Don’t waste time getting to Dock of the Bay

Seeking a spot on the shore on a sweltering summer’s eve, we sauntered down to Dock of the Bay at 9025 Cuckhold Point Rd. on Miller’s Island.

We went early to be assured of a seat on the deck. However, just as we arrived so did a rain cloud, which ruined those plans. Our early arrival did, however, let us claim a choice window seat with a view of the Craighill Light just beyond the stone jetty.

The menu which claims “the view is as good as the food” lists Appetizers, Salads, Raw Bar and Soups, Entrees served with two sides, Sandwiches (hot with fries; cold with chips) and Desserts. A Children’s Menu offers seven choices ranging from $3.95 to $7.95.
On our way in, the bulletin board listing Daily Specials caught our attention and determined our selections. For only $10 each, I ordered the Flounder with baked potato; he went for the Leg of Lamb with mashed potatoes. Both specials also included seasonal vegetables.

A little standup card on the table enticed me to order a Miller Chill Beer ($3.10) “inspired by an authentic Mexican recipe – a chelada style light beer brewed with a hint of lime and salt perfect for when things heat up.” It went perfectly with my Flounder. He drank an Iced Tea ($1.42).

We were surprised by the size of our entrees; truly a big bargain for the small price. His Leg of Lamb consisted of two large slices that were “very tender with a very tasty mild lamb flavor.” The mashed potatoes were “excellent.” My large side of Flounder could have been caught that very afternoon. The baked potato was tender though cooked in foil. Our seasonal vegetables were a heaping helping of nicely done zucchini, squash, carrots and red onion. We had to ask for rolls but otherwise our server Maria was efficient.

Deciding to linger, we shared a slice of Pecan Pie ($5.95) with Ice Cream (.95).
With tax and tip, our tasty and pleasing meal with great summer scenery came to $37.75.
